Sam Sherry & Ursa Major: Echoes Of The Prophet

Here is a recent review of Echoes by critic S.D. Feeney

Echoes of The Prophet began with a song to celebrate a birth in 1994. It seemed natural to look to the chapter of Kahlil Gibran's masterwork, The Prophet, entitled, "On Children." The book drew me in and an entire cycle of songs followed. The CD has eight "Gibran" songs, three instrumentals and two brief bass solo pieces.

The players are very special jazz musicians. Vocalist Chris Humphrey records for Cadence/CIMP. Bill Pierce, the tenor saxophonist, worked extensively with Art Blakey and Tony Williams; he chairs the woodwind department at Berklee. Trombonist and alto-flugelhorn player Scott Reeves works with David Liebman and chairs the jazz department at CCNY. Guitarist Mark Kleinhaut is one of Maine's leading jazz figures. Drummer Billy Arnold has inspired me for three decades. And my son Dylan Sherry -- only fourteen at the time -- plays second tenor, soloing on "This Message."

On "Ancient Notion" and "Fun Is Good" Southport recording artist Tim O'Dell plays saxophone and Jan Van Voorst plays drums.
